Chess Story

In 1938 Vienna, lawyer Dr. Josef Bartok is preparing to leave for the United States with his wife when the Nazi takeover brings him into the hands of the Gestapo. They demand confidential information, but Bartok refuses to cooperate and is placed in solitary confinement, where months of isolation begin to wear him down. After obtaining a book about chess, he uses the game to keep his mind active, though this new refuge gradually turns into an obsession.
