Free State of Jones
In 1863, Mississippi farmer Newton Knight serves as a medic in the Confederate army, but he has no wish to fight for a cause built on slavery. After his nephew dies in battle, Newton returns home to protect his family and is soon branded a deserter, forcing him to hide in the swamps with runaway slaves. He later joins them with other local farmers, organizing resistance against Confederate forces in Jones County.
