The Death of Stalin
Joseph Stalin’s sudden death leaves the Soviet leadership without its central authority, and senior officials immediately begin competing for control of the country. Nikita Khrushchev, Lavrenti Beria and Georgy Malenkov try to secure their positions while dealing with one another’s schemes, shifting alliances and growing uncertainty over who is actually in charge. With Field Marshal Zhukov and Vyacheslav Molotov drawn into the struggle, the succession becomes an increasingly chaotic contest inside the government.
