The Butler
Cecil Gaines, the son of a sharecropper, leaves the South and builds a career in domestic service before becoming a butler at the White House in 1952. As he serves eight presidents over the following decades, Cecil witnesses the country’s struggle over racial segregation and the growing civil rights movement from behind closed doors. At home, his wife Gloria battles alcoholism while their eldest son Louis joins the fight for racial justice, forcing Cecil to reconsider his quiet role in a changing America.
