Minamata

In the 1970s, war photographer W. Eugene Smith returns to Japan on assignment for Life magazine. In the coastal town of Minamata, he finds communities suffering from mercury poisoning and begins documenting the consequences of the environmental disaster. His photographs bring the victims’ situation to wider attention, but creating the report means confronting the scale of what has happened and the forces surrounding the town.
