Harakiri (1962)

Hanshiro Tsugumo, an unemployed veteran without a family, arrives at the prosperous House of Iyi with a solemn request: he wants to perform seppuku in its courtyard and asks for a samurai to serve as his second. The clan’s senior counselor doubts that the ronin is truly seeking an honorable death and suspects he is trying to obtain charity instead. When Hanshiro asks about Motome Chijiiwa, another samurai who recently visited the estate with the same proposal, the household is forced to confront the meaning of honor behind its strict traditions.
