Susan Carpenter is a single mother working as a waitress while raising her two sons in a small town. Her 11-year-old son Henry is a remarkable child who helps manage the household and looks after his younger brother, Peter. When Henry realizes that the girl living next door is being abused, he tries to convince Susan that the adults around her are not going to intervene. Susan must decide how far she is willing to go to protect the girl, following a plan Henry has carefully worked out.
