In 1916, French infantry commander Colonel Dax is ordered to lead his regiment against a heavily defended German position known as the Anthill. The attack fails, and the generals respond by putting three soldiers on trial for cowardice, selecting them to bear responsibility for the operation. Dax takes on their defense, challenging the military command that wants to protect its decisions by punishing the men beneath it.
