Radio astronomer Ellie Arroway has spent years searching the skies for evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth. Her work changes when an observatory detects a signal built from prime numbers, and its contents point to a technology capable of carrying a person across space. As governments and scientists argue over how to respond, Ellie must defend her role in the mission while facing questions about proof, belief and the limits of human knowledge.
