At a hospital, a group of children and teenagers with different illnesses form an unexpected friendship while undergoing long-term treatment. Their days are shaped by diagnoses ranging from anorexia and cystic fibrosis to cancer, but together they create the Red Band Society and set their own rules for life on the ward. Charlie, who has been in a coma for several months, cannot join them directly, though he hears everything happening around him. Nurses and doctors try to support the patients as they face the limits imposed by their conditions.
