In 1783, former soldier Ross Poldark returns to Cornwall after fighting in the American War of Independence and finds his family home in ruins. His father has died, the family mine has been closed, and Elizabeth, the woman he loves, is engaged to his cousin Francis. With his inheritance lost and the region facing poverty and unrest, Ross has to decide how to rebuild his life while confronting the changes that have taken place in his absence.
