After her father leaves the church, Margaret Hale moves with her family from southern England to Milton, a northern town shaped by the cotton industry. There she meets John Thornton, the determined owner of a local mill, whose views on work and society clash with her own. When the factory workers go on strike, Margaret openly supports them, putting her at odds with Thornton and forcing both of them to reconsider their relationship.
