Lyra Silvertongue, an orphan living in a parallel world where science, theology and magic exist side by side, sets out to find a friend who has been kidnapped. Her search leads to a secret operation targeting children and draws her toward Dust, a mysterious phenomenon whose nature may explain the forces shaping her world. Along the way, Lyra joins Will, a boy with a knife that can open passages between different worlds, and becomes involved in a conflict reaching far beyond her own home.
