Detectives Charlie Hicks and Elaine Renko are assigned to work together despite holding sharply different views about police work and professional ethics. Their partnership begins five years before the predicted Apocalypse, as rising temperatures threaten to make Earth uninhabitable. While the two investigate crimes in a society approaching destruction, they also become targets of people who want them silenced—and gone.
