In 2048, police detective John Kennex returns to duty after spending 17 months in a coma, carrying the consequences of an attack that killed his partner and left him with a synthetic leg. New regulations require every officer to work alongside an android, so John is assigned Dorian, a discontinued model whose unexpected emotional responses set him apart from standard police robots. As they investigate crimes together, John must adapt to both his unusual partner and a department he no longer knows how to fit into.
