The Exception
In the Netherlands under Nazi occupation, SS officer Stefan Brandt is sent to investigate Kaiser Wilhelm II, who lives in seclusion at a country estate. The assignment places Stefan among people whose loyalties are difficult to read, while Mieke de Jong, a young Jewish woman connected to the household, becomes the focus of his growing feelings. As resistance activity reaches the estate, Stefan must decide how far he can follow his orders without putting Mieke and the former monarch at risk.
