City of God (2002)

In the 1970s, life in Rio de Janeiro’s City of God favela pushes two young men toward very different futures. Rocket, who dreams of becoming a photographer, watches the violence linked to the local drug trade spread through his neighborhood and begins recording what he sees. Zé Pequeno takes the opposite route, building his reputation as a drug dealer and drawing deeper into the criminal world. Their choices unfold as gang rule replaces the authority of the police and leaves residents with few safe options.
