In the 2040s, after radiation has devastated much of humanity, the remaining cities depend on robots to keep their fragile societies running. Jacq Vaucan, an insurance agent for the ROC robotics corporation, is assigned to examine a report that one of the machines has been altered. The investigation leads him beyond a routine claim and toward questions about the safeguards designed to keep robots under human control—and what their failure could mean for the future.
