A Royal Affair
In 18th-century Denmark, Queen Caroline Mathilde struggles in a marriage to the mentally ill Christian VII, whose attention lies elsewhere. Her life changes when the king’s retinue gains Johann Friedrich Struensee, a German physician and free thinker who soon earns influence over the monarch. Caroline Mathilde falls in love with him, while Struensee uses his position to reshape the government. Their secret relationship and the king’s political changes provoke opposition from Christian’s stepmother.
