In 2033, programmer Nathan Brown is critically injured when his self-driving car crashes, leaving him unable to survive in the ordinary world. His girlfriend, Ingrid Kannerman, chooses to upload his consciousness to Lakeview, a luxurious virtual afterlife where Nathan must continue living as a digital resident. Nora Antony, a customer-service worker in Brooklyn, becomes responsible for helping him adjust to this unfamiliar existence while questions surrounding the accident begin to complicate her work.
