Four years after an epidemic caused the dead to rise and nearly destroyed Britain, a treatment allows some of them to return to society. Kieren Walker, a teenage survivor of the condition, goes back to his small Lancashire town and tries to resume his life among people who remember what happened. The rehabilitation program puts him face to face with hostility from the community as well as the personal struggles he has brought home with him.
