In a parallel version of the present, the Hawkins family turns to Anita, a Synth designed to serve as a household assistant. These advanced robots look so much like real people that their presence is beginning to change ordinary family life and the way society uses technology. As the Hawkinses grow accustomed to Anita, the boundary between a useful machine and something that can act beyond human control becomes increasingly difficult to define.
