Shadow Moon, a former prisoner, is preparing to leave prison and return to a quiet life with his wife when he learns that she has died in an accident. On his way home, he meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, who knows far more about him than a stranger should and offers him work as a traveling companion. Shadow soon discovers that Wednesday is one of the old gods, gathering allies for a conflict with new deities competing for power in America.
