In 1917, newly qualified doctor Vladimir Bomgard is sent to an isolated, impoverished village and left to run its hospital on his own. With limited support and patients who do not always trust modern medicine, he has to handle the demands of rural practice far from the world he knew. As the pressure of the work grows, Vladimir turns to morphine, while his daily struggles force him to confront what being a doctor truly involves.
