Mavis Gary is a divorced writer of successful young-adult novels whose personal life has stalled despite her professional success. She returns to her Midwestern hometown after learning that her former boyfriend, Buddy Slade, is married and raising a family. Mavis decides to pursue him again, forcing her to deal with the life he has built and the distance between her own ambitions and her unresolved attachment to the past.
