Metropolis (1927)
In the futuristic city of Metropolis, wealthy citizens live above ground while workers endure exhausting labor in the underground machine halls. Freder Fredersen, the privileged son of city ruler Johann Fredersen, enters this hidden world and is shaken by what he sees. He then meets Maria, a worker who speaks of a coming mediator between those who rule the city and those who keep it running. Freder begins searching for a way to confront the divide that holds Metropolis together.
