As Queen Elizabeth I’s succession is contested and rebellion gathers around the Earl of Essex, Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, is caught between the politics of the court and a secret literary ambition. He believes his plays could influence the struggle for power, but publishing them under his own name would put him at risk. Instead, the works appear under William Shakespeare’s name, raising the question of who truly wrote the celebrated plays.
