When 9 awakens in a world emptied of humans, he finds only ruined surroundings and machines that continue to hunt his kind. He eventually reaches a small group of other artificial beings hiding from these attacks, but their refuge offers no real way forward. Although 9 is the newest member of the community, he argues that they must leave concealment behind and confront the machines threatening their survival.
